Bailey Hortorium Herbarium Tours

What is the herbarium? What happens at the herbarium? How are herbaria used today?

All these questions (and more) are answered by the curatorial staff here at the Liberty Hyde Bailey Hortorium Herbarium during interactive tours for groups small and large.

Who comes to these tours? Often we have college classes, high school and junior high school classes, staff and faculty from departments across Cornell's campus, as well as garden clubs and plant societies.

In a general tour we'll show you some interesting plant specimens from our collections and share their stories. We'll talk about how even very old collections are relevant to all kinds of research today, including climate change, invasive species, extinction, and other topics.

We can talk about and demonstrate how to collect and press live plants, as well as how to mount them to create new herbarium specimens.

For groups with interest in other topics such as rare and illustrated botanical books and horticultural catalogues, we can tie these in with a general tour, or we can create a specialized presentation tailored to groups with specific interests relating to plants.

Typically we can accommodate up to 25 people at a time, for a period of about an hour to an hour and a half. Tours can be scheduled most weekdays, and we are located on campus on the 4th floor of Mann Library. If you or your class or group think you might be interested in visiting the herbarium, please let us know!
