HERBARIUM CURATION: Students will be trained in general herbarium practices of collecting, mounting, filing, imaging and digitization of plant specimens. Students will also be trained in proper ways to identify and annotate herbarium specimens, and specimen loan procedures.

FIELD STUDIES: A major component of this internship will be field work in the local area around Ithaca, New York. We anticipate two day-long field trips per week to Cornell, Ithaca, or NY State-owned land. During field trips, students will collect herbarium specimens, photograph plants and digitally map the species encountered with georeferencing software developed for iPads and iPhones.

CAYUGA FLORA PROJECT: Specimens, images, and map coordinates will be incorporated by students into an ongoing project that will produce an online guide to the local flora of the Finger Lakes region. This will be coordinated with our training program in herbarium curation. The guide will include digital keys, images, and description, all of which the students will help develop.
