Family: Cupressaceae | |
Native to: California and southern Oregon, near the coast
EVERGREEN CONIFER. The redwood is the TALLEST TREE IN THE WORLD, reaching heights of ca. 365 feet. Redwoods are restricted to mild areas of coastal northern California, almost always within the "fog belt" zone. Fog is an important source of moisture in the dry summer months, and likely the reason these giants can persist in such a summer-arid climate.
Horticultural notes: Not hardy in Ithaca. Can be grown as a houseplant, if placed outside in the summer. |
