Native to: Tropical South America (parents); this hybrid does not occur in the wild.
This is a hybrid between the two species, V. amazonica and the slightly smaller V. cruziana. Here is video of the nighttime opening of the flower (1.5 MB): Note the tiny beetles swarming on the outside of the flower. Here is a video of the second night opening; in this case, the flower is releasing any trapped insects and they must pass over the open stamens presenting pollen (2.5 MB) :
Horticultural notes: Aquatic only. Culture as for water lily. Does well in 1-2 feet of warm water in full sun. Cannot tolerate frost.
