Nerium oleander
"Oleander"
LHBC 584
Family: Apocynaceae
Native to: Mediterranean region, India, Iran, and Southern China
EVERGREEN SHRUB. TOXIC. Extremely toxic plant. One of the most poisonous plants that contains cardiac glycosides and is one of the few toxic plants that has consistently produced fatalities in the past. Note that our plant has "double flowers" and has lost the stamens and ovary so it is of little value for teaching floral structure but horticulturists prize such uninteresting mutants.
Horticultural notes: Extremely common in cultivation in California and through subtropical and tropical regions. An alternative common name could be "Freeway Plant" because of the extensive plantings along medians in California. Resistenat to pollution, drought and other abuse.
