Illicium anisatum
"Star Anise"
LHBC 576
Family: Schisandraceae
Native to: Japan
EVERGREEN SUBTROPICAL. TOXIC. Some species in this genus are used as spices; this species is considered POISONOUS. Although we have a native Star Anise in the southern U.S., and a closely related species in northeastern Mexico, this species is from eastern Asia. The U.S. species has much larger, showy flowers. All parts of the plant are highly fragrant. The family is considered to be one of the first offshoots of the flowering plants, often placed near the water lilies.
Horticultural notes: Moist tropical or subtropical conditions, can be grown in shade.
