Vanilla planifolia
"Vanilla Orchid"
LHBC 566
Family: Orchidaceae
Native to: Mexico
EVERGREEN LIANA. A strong liana (vine). The source of natural flavoring called vanilla. The only orchid species cultivated commercially as a crop/food plant other than ornamental species. The "vanilla bean" is actually the long seed pod, which contains thousands of minute seeds (the flecks in our ice cream) in addition to the popular flavor.
Horticultural notes: Vanilla Orchids can be grown in greenhouses, as a houseplant or outdoors in tropical areas.
