Bougainvillea spectabilis
"Great Bougainvillea"
LHBC 438
Family: Nyctaginaceae
Native to: Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Argentina
EVERGREEN SHRUB/SCRAMBLER. Bougainvilleas are show not because of the flowers which are inconspicuous, but because of the three brightly colored bracts that typically subtend three small flowers. However, in many mutant cultivars (such as this plant), the flowers are replaced by malformed bract-structures to produce a "double" flower that is appealing to horticulturists. The flowers and inflorescences REALLY look like this.
Horticultural notes: Widely cultivated in subtropical and tropical areas. Easily grown, but in subtropical areas often needs to be planted against a warm or hot sunny wall.
