Native to: Eastern and Southern Africa. Found in seasonal dry forests and savannas.
SARCOCAUL. Baobab trees live in the dry forest and savana of eastern and southern Africa. They drop their leaves in the dry season. These sarcocauls are the largest in the world. In times of drought, elephants often dig into the soft trunks of baobabs with their tusks. Dried fruit pulp can be made into an edible powder.
Horticultural notes: 10-12. Now relatively common as a houseplant. Reduce watering during dormancy.
