EVERGREEN SHRUB. Camellias are related to the true tea (the one that you use to make Earl Grey, or Green Tea, for instance). Wild type flowers have numerous stamens and a central syncarpous ovary, and much more attractive and interesting than cultivars.
Horticultural notes: Commonly cultivated in California and the southern U.S. for the dramatic and colorful displays of flowers. Unfortunately, almost Camellia cultivars are "double" flowers that are mutants which have lost their reproductive parts and changed them into "petals" ...
