Cephalocereus senilis
"Old Man Cactus,
Bernie Cactus"
LHBC 240
Family: Cactaceae
Native to: Mexico
STEM SUCCULENT. In the wild, large sizes, up to 10 meters tall! Cephalocereus is aptly named because of the long white modified spines that clothe the plant. One of our specimens was dubbed "Bernie Cactus" by a visiting schoolboy who apparently had been watching the news recently.
Horticultural notes: Can be grown in relatively frost-free zones in full sun in well-drained soil. If grown as a houseplant, shift to a sunny place outside in the summer (but do this slowly to avoid sunburn). Otherwise, in low light, these cacti will become etiolated and spindly.
