Pereskia grandifolia
"Rose Cactus"
LHBC 231
Family: Cactaceae
Native to: Brazil
Pereskia is a true cactus that has "normal" leaves. It is sometimes called Barbados Gooseberry - the edible fruits are often made into jam. Note that it still has spines as in other cacti, and these also emerge from wooly or felty patches called "areoles" that occur at the nodes. The pink flowers of this species are showy and resemble a rose (from a distance).
Horticultural notes: Can only be grown in warmer subtropical or tropical zones, with good drainage and usually reduced moisture during the "winter" months when it often becomes leafless.
