Melocactus oreas
"Turk's Cap"
LHBC 198
Family: Cactaceae
Native to: Brazil, in the states of Bahia and Minas Gerais
This species belongs to a complex of similar but variable populations from Brazil that have been identified by various names. The most interesting aspect of the genus is the "cephalium" - the fuzzy and/or spiny mound or column at the top of the plant. The cephalium produces flowers and these aren followed by small pinkish or reddish fruits that are embedded in the wool. The genus Melocactus is noteworthy for the fuzzy cephalium at the top of the stem, which develops on older, mature plants. Melocactus flowers are pollinated by hummingbirds in the wild, although other insect visitors are common. Flowers are followed pink or red smooth fruits that emerge from the cephalium.
Horticultural notes: Melocactus requires well-drained soil and relatively dry "treatment" during winter months. One of the most tropical of cacti and difficult to cultivate outdoors in subtropical climates such as California.
