Aechmea fasciata |
"Urn Plant" |
LHBC 163 |
Family: Bromeliaceae |
Native to: Neotropics: southeastern Brazil. Epiphytic in tropical forests. |
...
EPIPHYTE. Related to the true pineapple. Like many members of the family Bromeliaceae, Aechmea has a rosette of stiff leaves with a "tank" in the center that collects water (and in the wild, organic debris). Leaves are covered with white peltate trichomes. |
Horticultural notes: Commonly cultivated as a house plant. Favored because of the extreme persistence of the inflorescence, which is made up most of stiff, spiny-margined bracts that retain a pink color for weeks after flowering. |
