Ananas comosus
"Pineapple"
LHBC 160
Family: Bromeliaceae
Native to: Neotropical, now cultivated throughout tropics.
EPIPHYTE. Pineapples are one of the best known tropical fruits. What appears to be a single large fruit actually develops from many separate flowers that are fused together, and thus is a compound fruit. Pineapples are grown in large monocultures and generally these fields receive heavy applications of fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides.
Horticultural notes: Can be started from the whorl of bracts at the tip of the fruit, which will root in moist medium. Commercial pineapple plantations often extend "as far as the eye can see" and are a good example of biodiversity suppression with fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides.
