Ficus religiosa
"Bo Tree, Peepul Tree"
LHBC 116
Family: Moraceae
Native to: India and Southwest China
The Bo Tree or Peepul Tree is sacred in India. The most interesting characteristic of the tree are the long drip-tips at the tips of the leaves. Drip tips are found in trees growing in tropical wet forests, and the trip helps to channel excess water off of the leaf. This reduces the likelihood that fungi or epiphytic algae, mosses or liverworts will establish on the leaf and reduce its photosynthetic capacity.
Horticultural notes: Easily grown in tropical and subtropical regions. Can reach enormous sizes.
