(11 Jan) 1850 - 1942 (30 Apr)

CORNELL AFFILIATION:
Received the first D.Sc. awarded by Cornell University (1886). First botanist to work at New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva.

Joseph Charles Arthur was an American mycologist, plant pathologist, and man of "firsts" born in Lowville, New York. He grew up on a farm in Iowa and attended what was then Iowa State College to study botany under Charles E. Bessey. There, he was a member of the first graduating class and the first to earn an M.S. in botany. After graduating, he took up teaching positions at the University of Wisconsin and Minnesota between 1879 and 1886. Afterwards, Arthur moved to New York and became the first botanist to work at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva. He continued his studies in plant pathology at Cornell and became the first D.Sc. recipient at the university in 1886. Following his time at Cornell, Arthur became a professor and head of the Botany Department at Purdue University. At Purdue, he became the first botanist at the university's Agricultural Experiment Station and devoted his time to studying rust fungi. He also wrote several books and founded the herbarium at Purdue, now called the Arthur Herbarium. During his career, he named and described hundreds of new taxa from North and South America, India, and the Philippines and served as president of the Indiana Academy of Science, the American Phytopathological Society, and the Botanical Society of America.
