W.W. Rowlee received both his B.L. and Sc.D. at Cornell, continuing to teach and work there until his death in 1923. His students included other prolific botanical figures such as E.J. Durand and K.M. Wiegand. His primary interest was in dendrology, with a particular expertise in North American willows and comparative anatomy of woods. During World War I, he was appointed the task of of investigating potential uses of balsa wood in military aircraft. Aside from teaching and research, Rowlee was the superintendent of University grounds for 28 years, a member of a number of University committees, and a member of several scientific organizations such as the Botanical Society of America.
