| Ethel Zoe Bailey was the first curator of the L.H. Bailey Hortorium (Cornell University), established in 1935 by her father Liberty Hyde Bailey, and remained there until her retirement in 1957. Ethel was a distinguished botanist and horticulturalist in her own right. In 1911, she graduated from Smith College with an A.B. in Zoology, but soon afterwards went to work with her father and committed her life to botanical work. She was instrumental in the creation of many of her father's published works, including The Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture and Manual of Cultivated Plants. She also co-authored Hortus and Hortus Second. Ethel Zoe went on collecting trips with L.H. Bailey to Latin America, China, and Japan. Independently, she collected seed and nursery catalogues from around the world, which she used in conjunction with cultivated plant material to create a master index used by L.H. Bailey for several of his reference works. This collection was named in her honor as the Ethel Z. Bailey Horticultural Catalogue Collection. After retiring as Curator, she continued to volunteer at the L.H. Bailey Hortorium for the rest of her life. |
