| Stephen Thayer Olney was a wool merchant from Burrillville, Rhode Island. Educated in Providence, he wrote a catalogue of Rhode Island flora for the Providence Franklin Society in 1845. He published few other works but was a well-respected expert in Carices and wrote the Carex section of Sereno Watson's Botany (1871) in the Report of the Geological Exploration of the 40th Parallel. Olney's large algal collection was used extensively for a list of Rhode Island algae, also published in 1871. He collected intensively and built a large private herbarium, which he donated to Brown University. In his later years, Olney reportedly suffered from cognitive impairment, although his exact condition is unclear. He never married, but had an impressive network and was friends with the famed Asa Gray, who named the genus Olneya after him. |
