Elizabeth Gertrude Britton

(09 Jan) 1858 - 1934 (25 Feb)

Elizabeth Gertrude Knight Britton was an American bryologist and pteridologist known for being one of the founding leaders of The New York Botanical Garden. She was married to Nathaniel Lord Britton, but only very rarely coauthored with him. Britton was a prolific researcher, and authored numerous publications (ca. 170 in our database) on moss systematics, often in the Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club, The Observer, The Bryologist, and the North American Flora, in addition to publishing on ferns and conservation. She collected type specimens (e.g., Thelypteris brittonae and Ponthieva brittoniae), discovered new species (Schizaea pusilla), and was the first to describe the "fruit" of Eustichium norvegicum. Elizabeth was also dedicated to wildflower preservation; she assisted in the organization of the Wild Flower Preservation Society of America (1902) and chaired the Conservation Committee of the Federated Garden Clubs of New York (1925). Her roles, although significant, were volunteer positions including Honorary Curator of the Mosses (1912-death) and advising doctoral students at Columbia. With Abel Joel Grout, one of her students, in 1908 she founded the Sullivant Moss Society (known as the American Bryological and Lichenological Society after 1949).
