Edgar T. Wherry

(10 Sep) 1885 - 1982 (14 May)

Edgar T. Wherry was an American mineralogist, soil scientist, and fern expert from Philadelphia who was the foremost fern taxonomist of his time and wrote three key guides to eastern North American ferns. His interest began at age 30 when he spotted an American walking fern (Asplenium rhizophyllum) growing on gneiss and wondered about its soil requirements. From then on, his career was heavily focused on pteridology. The first of his fern guides was Guide to Eastern Ferns (1937), followed by The Fern Guide (1961), and finally The Southern Fern Guide (1964). These guides helped popularize ferns among botanists. Before, there were only poor-quality pteridophyte identification manuals to rely on. Wherry was the president of the American Fern Society (AFS) from 1934-1939 and was very active in the other areas of the society. All of the royalties he earned from his fern guides were donated to the AFS. Established in 1989, the Edgar T. Wherry award is given by the Botanical Society of America for the best presented paper in the Pteridological Section.
