Leroy Abrams

(01 Oct) 1874 - 1956 (15 Aug)

A mid-westerner by birth, the American botanist LeRoy Abrams moved to California with his family as a young boy. Abrams became interested in the natural history of his new environs and was subsequently educated at Stanford, where his study of botany was encouraged by William Russel Dudley, an early Cornellian. Abrams similarly inspired others in his subsequent role as Professor of Botany and Curator at the Stanford Herbarium. His Flora of Los Angeles and Vicinity was published in 1904, and Abrams completed three of the four volumes of the monumental Illustrated Flora of the Pacific States before his death in 1956.
