CORNELL AFFILIATION:
Professor, L.H. Bailey Hortorium; Director, L.H. Bailey Hortorium

David M. Bates was a plant systematist, economic botanist and conservationist, and a professor and director of the L.H. Bailey Hortorium at Cornell University. Bates had an undergraduate degree from Cornell and received a Ph.D. at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he was a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow. Post doctoral work was completed at the British Museum and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Bates then joined the faculty at Cornell, where he remained for the entirety of his academic career. Bates was expert in the systematics of the Malvales and also studied the Cucurbitaceae and the palms. While he was Director of the Bailey Hortorium, Bates led colleagues and staff to complete the authoritative Hortus Third, the last iteration of a monumental dictionary of cultivated plants, begun by L.H. Bailey, and still in wide use today. Bates' interest in conservation developed later in his career and focused on two international development projects, one in the Dominican Republic and the other in the Philippines. He taught Ethnobotany, Biosystematics and Evolution of Crop Plants, the Healing Forest, and Traditional Agriculture in Developing Countries and was mentor to over 40 graduate students.
