Constantine John Alexopoulos

Constantine Alexopoulos was an American mycologist and myxomycologist whose textbook Introductory Mycology, first published in 1952, went through several editions and was translated into several languages. He also published two other influential textbooks: Algae and Fungi in 1967 and The Myxomycetes (co-authored with G.W. Martin). His work with Roger Storck on fungal taxonomy using DNA components is noted as breakthrough research. in 1969. Alexopoulos began his career in 1932 when, shortly after receiving his Ph.D. at University of Illinois, he took over teaching duties of his advisor Frank Lincoln Stevens upon his death. In 1935 he took a more permanent position at Kent State University, and between 1938-1947 took various positions in Greece, Egypt, and Brazil before joining the faculty at Michigan State University. He moved to University of Iowa in 1956, and finally University of Texas (Austin) in 1962, where he worked until retirement in 1977.
