| Harry E. Ahles was a self-taught North American botanist, and by most accounts, brilliant and indefatigable. Beginning as a gardener at the New York Botanic Garden, Ahles was hired to curate the herbarium at the University of Illinois, and subsequently served as Herbarium Curator at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Ahles collaborated with G. Neville Jones and G. D. Fuller on the "Vascular Plants of Illinois", with C. Ritchie Bell and A.E. Radford on the Manual of Vascular Flora of the Carolinas. He also began working on a New England flora, which was unfinished at his death. Ahles collected innumerable specimens to document the floras of each of these places. Magee's "Flora of New England and Adjacent New York", based largely on Ahle's work, was published in 1999. |
