(07 Apr) 1904 - 1975 (06 Apr)

Caroline Allen was an American plant taxonomist and botanical illustrator, with expertise in the Lauraceae. She was a staff member at both the Arnold Arboretum and the New York Botanical Garden and during her career, described over 275 species. Allen did her undergraduate work at Vassar College and spent two years as a herbarium assistant to Alfred Rehder at the Arnold Arboretum. She received her Master's and Doctorate from Washington University in St. Louis, then returned to the Arnold Arboretum and, at the direction of E.D. Merrill, commenced work on a growing collection of Asian Lauraceae. When Asian expeditions were ended during wartime, she turned to New World Lauraceae. In 1948 Allen returned to New York to care for her aging mother and grandmother and began her association with the New York Botanical Garden. She was appointed a "collaborator in the Lauraceae," working with Bassett Maguire on several National Science Foundation grants, and in 1959-1972 was a Visiting Research Associate supported by six continuous NSF grants in her own name. Allen visited European herbaria and made field trips to Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, Brazil and Venezuela. She retired due to illness and relocated to Chapel Hill, North Carolina where she died in 1975.
