Anna Atkins

(16 Mar) 1799 - 1871 (09 Jun)

Anna Atkins was an English botanist and photographer who in 1843 self-published the first book to contain photographic images, Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions. Sir John Hershel, who invented the cyanotype photographic process just a year earlier, was a family friend. Atkins made contact prints of seaweed and by 1853 had filled three volumes with images. The daughter of a scientist, Atkins was unusually well-educated for a woman of her day. She assisted her father in his scientific endeavors, illustrating his 1820 translation of Lamarck's Genera of Shells. Atkins' foray into botanical photography would eventually include three other works produced in collaboration with Anne Dixon, most notably Cyanotypes of British and Foreign Ferns (1853) and Cyanotypes of British and Foreign Flowering Plants and Ferns (1854). Atkins retained the plant specimens used to create the cyanotypes, and later donated them to the British Museum.
