Karl Peter Thunberg

(11 Nov) 1743 - 1828 (08 Aug)

Karl Thunberg was a Swedish botanist and naturalist whose interest in understanding the local culture in places he collected, especially in Japan, led to an opening up of scientific and intellectual exchange between East and West during the 18th Century. A student of Linnaeus, he was also mentored by Johannes Burman and Laurens Gronovius in the Netherlands. With the goal of supplying the botanic garden at Leiden with exotic specimens, Burman and Gronovius arranged his transport to South Africa and points east with the Dutch East India Company, the only legal way for a non-Dutch scientist to collect in Dutch colonies. Thunberg collected in South Africa in 1771-1775, in Japan in 1775-1776, and in Java and Ceylon in 1777-1778. His personal herbarium, which comprised about 15,000 species, was deposited at University of Uppsala.
