Sten Gustav Ahlner was a Swedish lichenologist who studied at the University of Uppsala with G. Einar DuRietz during a very active period of lichen research. Ahlner's 1948 Ph.D. thesis on the distribution of lichens growing on select species of Nordic conifers included dot maps derived from his bicycle, and later, moped, excursions throughout Sweden, Norway and Finland. Ahlner described several species new to Eastern Europe; his collections are housed in the herbarium of the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm (S). Ahlner was appointed docent in Plant Biology at Uppsala in 1948 and in 1955, docent in botany at the University of Stockholm. He was also on the staff at the Museum of Natural History in Stockholm from 1950-1971. |
