Richard Chandler Alexander

(06 Mar) 1809 - 1902 (05 Dec)

Richard Chandler Alexander was an English physician early in his life, but poor health caused him to give up the profession and pursue botany and literary interests. He was also a diehard fan of croquet, and in 1868 (under the assumed name Meliora Spero) advertised to form the All-England Croquet Club. He authored a book of traditional Danish ballads in 1860, and in 1863 published On the Popular Names of British Plants. Alexander served as temporary Curator at the Fielding Herbarium, Oxford. He became Richard Chandler Alexander Prior in 1859, to comply with terms of inheritance from his mother's family. He collected in Europe, Austria, South Africa, North America, and the West Indies. His British collections were deposited at the British Museum (BM) and the remainder of his personal herbarium went to Kew Gardens (K).
