CORNELL AFFILIATION:
Undergraduate (1890-1894); Ph.D. student (1894-1898); Instructor, Department of Botany (1899-1907); Professor and Chair, Department of Botany (1913-1941)

Karl McKay Wiegand, a world-renowned plant taxonomist of his time, was born in Truxton, New York. He graduated from Cornell with a B.S. in Botany in 1894 and a doctorate in 1898. For the next nine years, Wiegand remained at Cornell as an instructor before accepting a position at Wellesley College as an associate professor. He married Ella Maude Cipperly, another botanist and former Cornell student, in 1906. The couple returned to Cornell where Wiegand headed the newly formed Department of Botany set up by L.H. Bailey in 1913. Until his retirement 28 years later, Wiegand successfully led and took on many roles within the department, earning it an exceptional reputation. While continuing his administrative duties, he taught courses in taxonomy, built up the relatively modest herbarium into an impressive collection of 250,000 specimens, and continued to research taxonomy and help botanists all over the country with resolving plant identifications. Wiegand's research led to hundreds of publications, including The Flora of the Cayuga Lake Basin in 1925, which he co-authored with A.J. Eames.
