George Francis Atkinson

(26 Jan) 1854 - 1918 (14 Nov)

CORNELL AFFILIATION:
Professor of Cryptogamic Botany (1892-1896); Professor and Chairman, Botany Department (1896-1918)

George F. Atkinson began his studies in zoology at Cornell University but later switched to botany. After brief teaching positions at several universities in the southeastern U.S., Atkinson returned to Cornell, where he spent the remainder of his career. His students included prolific botanists such as K.M. Wiegand, S.H. Burnham, and E.J. Durand. He primarily studied mycology and plant pathology, collecting an impressive number of specimens from around the globe and taking students on numerous field trips within the U.S. After the death of Albert N. Prentiss, a professor to Atkinson and Cornell's earliest Head of Botany, Atkinson took over as the new head of the department in 1896. He published many papers on fungi and several substantial and popular textbooks for teaching, including The Biology of Ferns, Elementary Botany, and Studies of American Fungi: Mushrooms Edible, Poisonous, Etc. Atkinson was an accomplished illustrator and photographer and often used his own images in his published works.
