Albert Leroy Andrews

(27 Dec) 1878 - 1961 (01 Nov)

CORNELL AFFILIATION:
Teaching Fellow in German (1908); Instructor in German and Scandinavian Languages (1909); Assistant Professor of German (1919); Professor of Germanic Philology (1931); Professor of Germanic Philology Emeritus (1946).

Albert Leroy Andrews was an American linguist and bryologist at Cornell who, despite never earning a botany degree, was a well-respected bryologist within the Cornell community and beyond, and he significantly contributed to the Wiegand Herbarium (CU) moss collection. Despite his keen interest in plants, he studied languages due to the lack of a reputable botany program at Williams College in his hometown of Williamstown, Massachusetts. He continued studying German and Scandinavian languages in a number of graduate programs, including at Harvard, Berlin, Kiel, Oslo, and Copenhagen. After receiving his Ph.D. from Kiel, Andrews joined the Cornell faculty and taught German and Scandinavian languages. While at Cornell, he became the Associate Editor for The Bryologist from 1938-1949 and Honorary Curator of the bryophyte collection at CU. On a voluntary basis, Andrews led student field trips, identified mosses, and built up CU's moss collection. He was particularly distinguished as a Sphagnum expert, writing a monograph of the genus for North American Flora. He wrote a number of other articles on both Germanic studies and bryology.
