Ernst Cleveland Abbe was an American plant anatomist known for his work on the Betulaceae and Myrsinaceae. After he completed his education at Cornell University and Harvard University, he became a faculty member at the University of Minnesota Department of Botany, where he stayed for the remainder of his career. He regularly led joint research expeditions with his spouse Lucy B. Abbe to Hudson Bay, the North Shore of Minnesota, Borneo, Malaysia, and elsewhere in Southeast Asia. Abbe was a fellow of several prestigious organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Linnaean Society of London. He was also the vice president (1951-1952) and later president (1952-1953) of the Minnesota Academy of Science.
